ĦĦĦĦ Activity at the China Centenary Altar in Beijing, Activity at the China Centenary Altar in Beijing. At the turn of the 20th century, an important historical moment with new century replacing the old, President Jiang Zemin pressed the button to light China Centenary Sacred Fire. The new millennium bell sounded solemnly, accompanying splendid fireworks shining the sky. Dragon and lion dances wielded together, people jubilated. At the climax in celebration of the new millennium, China's first tourist activity with the theme of New Millennium--China 2000, drew away its curtain. The activity attended by people of all walks of life in Beijing, was co-sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, People's Government and CNTA. More than 100 tourists from Germany, Holland, Italy and Japan watched the grand ceremony as specially invited guests. "The reason we choose Beijing at this moment is that we want to see how China, the ancient country with a long history, greets the new millennium," said a tourist. Affected and shocked by the ardent atmosphere, they all felt it's worth visiting China at that moment. Many of them highly praised the activity, saying that, "Only China could hold such a large-scale activity, which is identical with the big country!" Among the visitors, a party of 86 tourists organized by the Global Youth Bureau Co., Ltd. of Japan, arrived in Beijing on December 31, 1999. Most of them were persons of economic circle, and showed great interests in Chinese culture. Though staying only for two days in Beijing, they had so many fantastic activities, such as an evening banquet at Diaoyutai National Guest House, going to a national concert played by the China Opera and Ballet Theater, festive performance at the China Centenary Altar, and an activity to watch sun-rise at the Great Wall.
