Great Wall in
As the symbol of ancient Chinese civilization, the Great Wall has stood for more than 2,000 years. The wall was built in stages from the 5th century BC up to the 16th century AD as protection against northern nomadic tribes. Stretching from the bank of the Yalu River in the east and ending at the Jiayu Pass in the west, it snakes along the back of mountains, deserts and valleys for 6,350km (3900 miles). It is said to be 1 of the only 2 human engineering projects visible by astronauts from space with the naked eye. While for a long time, people mistook Shanhai Pass in Hebei province for the east end of the Great wall. In 1992, with the help of lots of history records and references, the archeologists have confirmed that the Hushan Great Wall in Liaoning province is the real east end of the huge Great Wall. After running out of Hebei province, the Great Wall silently winds its way west for about 1,000 kilometers and finally ends in the bank of Yalu River. Because of the simple structure and heavy dilapidation, this section of Great Wall was undiscovered for a long time. The masterpieces of this section include Hushan Great Wall, Jiumenkou Great Wall and Xigou Great Wall.
