Jiumenkou Great
Home : Great Wall of China : Famous Scene : Great Wall in Liaoning : Jiumenkou Great Wall: Back to Liaoning Province Back to Great Wall in Liaoning Font Size: - Large - Small Located on the border shared by Funing County of Hebei and Suizhong County of Liaoning provinces, Jiumenkou section of the Great Wall used to hold the only access between northern and central China. With a total length of 1704 meters, this section of Great Wall was first built in Northern Qi and further expanded in 1381 during the Ming dynasty. It is 15 km from Shanhaiguan Pass, and was famed as "The First Pass East to Beijing." A nine-gate, 110-meter-long bridge sits astride the Jiujiang River to regulate the flow and hold off any invading enemy. Hence the name "Jiumenkou" which meaning "Entrance to Nine Gates." The sluice gates on piece of granite slabs, and the piers were linked by U-shaped iron loops. Each gate is 5 meters wide and an encircled city was installed on each end of the bridge. The local people refer to the pass as "a row of stone piers." The pass has suffered serious war damages, but retains its contours even today. In 1992, this spot was repaired and opened as a tourism resort.
