13/10/2004 everyday life in bangkok
slowly I am having something like an everyday life in bangkok. in the morning I get up early to either go to the thai school or to university. I always have to leave home before 7.00 a.m in order to avoid the traffic. and then I take a bus to my destination. in the evening I get back home by boat as the traffic is so dense that it would take me about an hour to get from downtown bangkok to khao san (4 km). my room is really cozy now, I bought a wooden chair and a table from the weekend-market (chatu-chack) because I really needed a place to work with my computer. then I bought three little plants and a large artificial sunflower (tantawan in thai) which really makes a huge difference in the room. so, I really feel comfortable now. and the old lady is very friendly and tries to speak thai with me, which actually doesn't work that well, but anyway, I pretend to understand what she says. generally my thai has really improved. on the first couple of days at school I didn't understand a single word. now I am able to understand what is said, so that's pretty cool. I can even bargain at the market in thai, even though I am actually not allowed to speak thai yet. this is part of the philosophy of the thai school. they say that thai is such a complex language (which it really is) that is is impossible to learn it with books. the idea is that a laguage has to grow naturally in a person (just as jung children learn speaking) and that students should only listen to what is said at the beginning. after some time, they say, the words will come naturally to the student's mind when she (he) has a thought. and that's the moment when she can start to speak. I know, it probably sounds a bit esoteric to westerners, but I really think it works for thai because pronounciation and intonation are so important that thais won't understand you if you pronounce a word in the wrong way.
