19/9/2004 simply asia
before exploring asia with my backpack, I was 90% swiss. and it actually took me some time to get used to the asian culture. on my first trip to asia, I travelled around the south-eastern countries (thailand, cambodia, vietnam, malaysia, and indonesia). I was impressed by the friendliness of the people, and by their way to smile even in almost unbearable situations. I first thought that asians are always happy, and that's why they smile all the time. I remembered the smiling faces of my own family in sri lanka. and after two weeks I was sure that asia must be the happiest place on earth. it took me long to notice that the smiles are just a mask, hiding the real feelings of the people. it prevents them from being hurt and loosing their faces. I also learnt that asians are very sensitive to criticism, and I therefore learnt to hide it in friendly words. but then again, india was completely different. most indians hardly ever smile, and if they do, it's not necessarily a good sign. indians, especially north indians, are not very happy about the tourism. for them, tourists are people without any manners and culture. well, it's true actually, some tourists wear ugly clothes and behave completely inappropriate. one could refer to it as racism, but probably it's rather a way for them to protect themselves from the foreign influence. well, I don't know what it is, but you can feel it everywhere in north india. maybe the south is different. asia is not better or worse than switzerland, but it is just different. and, even though it takes time to get used to many things and sometimes you think you couldn't stand it any longer, it still remains one of the most fascinating places on earth (for me).
