The Salt Museum in Zigong

10/9/2004 a few books

I just thought, before actually leaving india, I might list a couple of books (fiction only) about india.

first of all, I want to mention 'the god of small things' by arundhati roy, probably one of the best books I've ever read. it's about two children living with their family in kerala (south india). I have borrowed this book in pulau nias (a little island close to sumatra, indonesia) from a little boy who sold books on the beach, although this specific book he didn't want to sell my, so I simply borrowed it for one day (, and I really read the whole book in a single day). later I bought the same book in switzerland to read it again. simply brilliant.

another very good book that gives some interesting insights into the inian culture and spirituality is 'kim' by rudyard kipling which I actually just bought in a shop today after searching for it in a couple of bookshops in shimla. it was recommended to me by a german who has visited india a couple of times and comes back every year. it's about a little boy, kim, who lives in india during the british raj.

I could recommend a large number of other authors, liker naipul, mistry, and many more, but as I am not sure if this post is going to interest anyone, I just want to mention another book which was really informative about india: 'my india' (in german: 'mein indian', I am not sure if it has been translated to english as I can't find it on amazon) by alexandra david-neel, the first white woman who has visited lhasa. she is a really good observer and when you read her books you learn a lot about details you would have never noticed travelling by yourself. she has also written a couple of books about other places like tibet and china.

hope, this wasn't too boring. just in case you know a good book about asia, please let me know, ok?
