The Salt Museum in Zigong

09/9/2004 india - sri lanka

many things happend in the last couple of days. no, not actually many things, but one thing happend: in that train from delhi to bangalore I got seriously ill and I spent almost two days in the toilet (a very dirty floor with a hole in the middle) of the karnataka express. and that's where I decided to leave the country. even though, I felt a bit better by the time the train rolled into the railway station of bangalore city, I went straight to the air sahara office (that's my airline) to book my flight to sri lanka for saturday. so, actually, I am going to leave india in two days time, and I am really looking forward to it. I mean, I really loved some parts of the country, especially the spiti valley in himachal pradesh, but I really didn't agree with the food. and it's not only me, but most of the tourists here (well, actually rather in north india) get ill every couple of days. that's just not fun.

additionally, fabian has to go to sri lanka anyway for a project he plans with the engineers without borders, so I just decided to go along and spend another three weeks over there before heading to bangkok for my master's thesis.

so that is why I am going to finally leave india without exploring the south which is really supposed to be beautiful. and I will definitly come back some day to see these parts of the country. but right now, I just need a little indian break. some nice, non-vegetarian food with a lot of spices and chillies (I don't know why north indians don't use any spices), and friendly people (indians are really very unfriendly), that's really what I am looking forward to. and once I am there, I might as well improve my sinhala a little bit.

I would love to add a fancy conclusion about my indian experience in this place, but I simply cannot think of anything concrete. I can't say, I loved india, because that is not true. there were so many occasions in which I would have preferred to be anywhere else but in india. but I certainly can't say I hated it. because that is not true either. I loved the trekking in the himachal mountains, I loved the tibetan villages and the friendly people from the spiti valley. actually, what I didn't like in india was delhi, the food, and the fact of feeling ill all the time. and that was enogh to push me off for this time. but as I said before, I will definitely come back some day...
