09/8/2004 shimla-naggar
finally, all the plans we have made for the next couple of days literally fell into water. the kinnaur and spiti valley we wanted to visit are no more accessible due to a big lake that was formed spontaneously in tibet by a landeslide which carries a huge amount of water. the chinese plan to burst it open which will result in a tidal wave of approximately 25 metres height (well, at least that's what the 'times of india' says). therefore, there is a large risk that we would be blocked in some place for a couple of weeks or even months due to broken bridges and landslides that will make the road impassable. as the spiti valley is famous for its tibetan-buddhist culture and is said to be one of the nicest places in india although it does not see many tourists, we will try to approach the valley from the other side. of course, this will prolong our journey to the valley, but we think it may be worth the effort. so, tomorrow we will board a (local) bus to manali and get out in naggar which is also told to be very nice. then, given the rohtang pass will be open by then (right now the road is closed because of a landslide), we will travel onwards to the the spiti valley. otherwise, we will stay in the kullu valley (that is where nagar is) and do some trekking or at least a couple of daytrips there.
