06/8/2004 delhi
we arrived in delhi this afternoon after a very very long train journey. the trains are not really what one would call 'luxury', but somehow the time passed and we arrived at the new delhi train station. now we are staying at a small hotel in the middle of the main bazaar, which is are very loud and dirty bazaar, but still reminds me very much of the kao san rd in bangkok. for those who haven't visited bangkok, one needs to add that this is the major backpacker area where you can find anything a 'good' backpacker desires. which actually makes me think that I am not really a 'good' backpacker, as I don't feel like buying pink plastic toys and all that stuff. however... trains in india are very different from trains in europe. as there is a huge price difference betweed the first and the second class, we decided to travel second class which turned out to be a good choice, even though the train was really full and the beds were not really comfortable. for indians, travelling by train is like a big party. everyone speaks to everyone, and after 44 hours we almost knew all the stories of all the people, including their families and friends. well, that's just what indian smalltalk is like. in our compartment we had a punjabi man who was an astrologer and a palm reader. so, we also learned many interesting things about ourselves;0) tomorrow, we will travel to shimla. as the train was cancelled due to the floods, we will travel by bus up to kalka and then to shimla by train, because the road from kalka to shimla seems to be very uncomfortable by bus and the train journey is said to provide one of the best views in india. unfortunately the train leaves kalka at 12 noon, so we are foced to catch a bus at 5 in the morning from the interstate bus terminal in dehli, which is a very 'lively' place. once in shimla, we will decide where to go for trekking and plan the next two weeks.
