The ancient classic novel, the Romance of the three Kingdoms was set in Chengdu, which at the time was the capital of the state of Shu. Visitors to Chengdu can find many ancient sites related to that period of Chinese history. The residence of the famous Tang Dynasty poet, Du Fu, is another frequented tourist site in Chengdu. There are many Buddhist and Taoist temples in Chengdu. Famous sites include the Taoist Qingcheng Mountain, Qingyang Temple, and Buddhist Wenshu Monastery. The Chongzhou Anzi river and Dayi Heishui river are located in Chengdu's surounding mountains and valleys. The reserves are affiliated with two famous giant panda nature reserves at Wolong and Fengtongzhai. The Chengdu zoo and the Panda Breeding Base in the northern suburbs has more pandas than any other zoo in the world. Also located in the northern suburbs are the Xiling Snow Capped mountain, JiuFeng Mountain, TianTai Monutain and Chaoyang and Longquan lakes. The Huashuiwan Hot Spring in Dayi near the snow-capped mountains is a burgeoning holiday resort. The lush Dujiangyan Longchi National Forest Park is silver in winter and is the only alpine skiing site close to city suburbs in southern China.
