GUILIN TRAVEL

Guilin is a big, multi-racial city with a population of over one million. Astriding the banks of Lijiang River, the city seems to be shrouded by an other-wordly aura. Guilin literally means "cassia tree forest", named for the local cassia trees whose sweet scent wafts through the city in autumn. For visitors, Guilin has many charms to offer; the traditional Guilin's cuisine is delicious, wholesome and exotic; the long years of history helps to enrich the city's stories as reflected through its intriguing pre-historic relics and dazzling cave incriptions; and the wide-ranging lanscapes of gurgling waterfront, legendary limestone caves and high-peak mountains have undoubtedly painted an illustrious panorama. It is no wonder why many Chinese admirers have praised Guilin as projecting "the most beautiful scenery under Heaven."

History

Guilin has been the political, economic and cultural center in northeast Gui Region ever since its founding. It was first established as the Guilin Shire under Emperor Qinshihuang during his southern expedition to Guangzhou in 214 B.C. The new shire was located on the Guixiang "Corridor" which was an important passage connecting Zhongyuan and Lingnan. During the Three-Kingdom period, the Wu Kingdom built up Shi'an Shire here, and from then on Guilin became a political and transition center. In 1940 Guilin was reset as a city and the capital of Guangxi Province.

Climate

Guilin is located in a mid-subtropical area and has plenty of annual rainfall. Hence the weather is quite moderate both in winter and summer; neither too cold nor too hot. There is distinct division between the four seasons, and the average annual temperature is about 19 degree celcius.

Economy

Agricultural products (e.g. Shatian pomelo, summer orange, fructus momordicae, ginkgo) and tertiary industry such as toursim and services constitute the mainstay of Guilin's economy. The recent improvement of Guilin's modern industrial capacity has also contributed to the city's prosperity.
