Xiamen, Jilin plan tourism boost

MUNICIPAL governments in Fujian and Jilin provinces have announced they will turn their attention to regional tourism in 2007. In Fujian, the Xiamen municipal government plans to add 16,145 hotel rooms to meet growing tourism projections for the region. By the end of 2006, Xiamen had 16,715 rooms, but this will need to double to handle the 31 million expected visitors by 2010. The municipal government said this number was based on annual tourism growth figures of 13 per cent. Meanwhile, the local government in Jilin province said it would spend RMB6 million (US$775,244) this year to strength the regional travel industry. The investment will be used to develop infrastructure, scenic spots and rural travel. According to the government, the province is set to receive 37.23 million tourists this year and earn a total of RMB33.7 million from the travel industry - an increase of 22 per cent from 2006.(source:ttg)
