Infants Die from Drug Mixture
Chinese health authorities warned yesterday that mixing a popular antibiotic with calcium supplements can be fatal for newborns. An undisclosed number of infants have died after receiving the antibiotic ceftriaxone sodium in conjunction with calcium, the State Food and Drug Administration said in an emergency note to drug makers on its Website, without providing details. Chinese parents often give their children calcium supplements to promote bone development. Pharmaceutical companies were ordered to change their product literature to warn users about the potentially deadly complications, and medical institutions were told to report adverse reactions. The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday that no local problems related to the mixture had been discovered. "Ceftriaxone sodium is a new antibiotic, and it's used widely in the city's hospitals," said Du Wenmin, vice director of the local FDA's inspection center. Shanghai's hospitals and pharmacies continued to sell the antibiotic yesterday. Patients were urged to stop using the drug if any adverse reactions occurred. The national drug watchdog ordered manufacturers to revise instruction booklets and labels for the antibiotic by warning that the drug should not be used with calcium solutions. The drug makers must also notify medical institutions and pharmacies that use their products of the revision.
