Seniors Receive Door to Door Nursing Services
Nurses are going door to door in one part of Zhabei District to ensure elderly residents are taking their medication and receiving care for any medical ailments. The Baoshan Community health service center in Zhabei has hired six full-time nurses and signed up 12 students from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to provide the service for 20,000 senior citizens in the area, especially those with mental problems. "Mental diseases among aged citizens in Baoshan Community are serious according to our annual investigation," said center director Chen Jigen. "Most of them suffer depression and other kinds of diseases as they live alone without care." The center has registered 65 senior citizens with serious mental diseases and offers drop-in service for them two or three times a week. "Our duty is to remind them to take their medicine at regular intervals and chat with them about their issues to comfort them," said Shi Ming, one of the six nurses. "We are trying to spread the service to more elders in the district," Chen said.
