Qinhuangdao Yansai Lake Scenic Area
Yansai Lake, whose former name was Shihe Reservior, is located 3.5km northeast of Shanhaiguan, Qinhuangdao. It is one of the most important components of the Longevity Mountain National Forest Park. The Yansai Lake is built for water storage. The name Yansai Lake (Sai means fort in Chinese) was given because it lies at the foot of the Yan Mountain and near Shanhai Pass, which is one of the key forts in ancient China. The lake is long, which stretches 15km and 50m deep. There is an island in the middle of the lake. The Dongshanjian Peak stands tall on the island. It is a natural stone cave located under the cliff of the solitary peak and is very deep. A small path leads to the top of the peak at the mouth of the cave. It was said that the immortal Lv Dongbin (one of the eight Taoist immortals in China) once fought with a dragon here. The battle was so furious that a path was formed when the dragon impinged on the peak. Besides that, many places of interest such as temples, pavilions are scattered around the area. The scenery in Yansai Lake is so beautiful that it earned the reputations of ¡°Lesser Guilin¡± and ¡°Lesser Three Gorge¡±. The Lake is surrounded by mountains, with rocks and cliffs in different shapes. The area is covered with green plants. You may find wild apricot and peaches everywhere. Here is the heaven of the birds with over 100 varieties of birds inhabiting here such as the black swan and the red-crowned crane.
