Hebei province -located in the north of the Yellow River, hence its name 'North of the River'- is wedged between Beijing and Tianjin. However, Hebei has enough attractions of its own to move out of the shadow of its two better known neighbors. Possessing first-rate sights and an important agriculture center of wheat and cotton, Hebei is divided into the mountainous tableland to the north, dramatically traversed by fragments of the Great Wall , and the endless dark brown earth of the southern plain.
Its capital, Shijiazhuang, is born of the railway age. The railway network constructed in the early 20th century changed Shijiazhuang from a modest-sized town into a prosperous and heavily populated city. The biggest People's Liberation Army officer training school in China is located here. The city is also the main base of the textile industry and a production center with a smokestack skyline.
Shijiagzhuang has many scenic spots and historical sites. The Mausoleum of Revolution Martyrs along with the Tomb of Canadian hero Dr. Norman Bethune and the Tomb of Indian Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis, great friend of China, are located in the Martyr's Memorial park to the west of town. Xibaipo¡ªa sacred place of the Chinese revolution¡ªwas once the site of the Headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee during wartime. The Great The over 1,400-year-old Zhaozhou Bridge , 40 kilometers southeast of the city, called the 'No.1 bridge under the heaven,' has been honored as an outstanding example of stone arch bridges in world history. At the Cangyanshan Scenic Area (70km southwest of Shijiazhaung) and Zhangshi Rock , interconnected wooded mountain peaks form an attractive landscape. Longxing Temple in the ancient city of Zhengding, ten kilometers north of Shijiazhuan, is most noted for the Guanyin, the 21-meter high bronze statue of 1,000 arms and 1,000 heads dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD).
Dishes in Shijiazhuang are a little saltier than cities in the south. One aspect that is said to encapsulate the creative Shijiazhuang cuisine is the chefs' adroit knife skills, shown in the many courses of the Hebei banquets, notably the cucumber banquet (Huanggua yanhui). The Chrysanthemum-shaped sleeve fish (Jinmao shizi yu) is probably the most famous local dish.
There are many department stores around the railway station selling local products, such as delicately painted snuffboxes, beautiful ceramics and paper cuts (mainly of various scenes from Chinese legends and history).
