Canyan Mountain (Cangyan shan)
Cangyan Shan, approximately translated either Pale Rock Mountain or Green Cliff Mountain, is located about 50km southwest of Shijiazhuang. The mountain peak rises to about 1,000 meters above sea level, and the scenic area that encompasses this is filled with ancient trees, steep cliffs, pagodas and temples. Buddhist life on the mountain started as far back as the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD), when the original monastery, that was later rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD), was founded. Nowadays the most famous sight is still this Hanging Monastery (Xuankong si), whose buildings are mainly Sui in style. From below, this gorgeous temple can be seen, perching on the backs of three single-arch, stone bridges that span a precipice, and which are reached on a winding stone path of 300 steps. How to get there: The mountain can be reached by minibus from Shijiazhuang (2-3hrs, RMB20-30) Opening hours: 09:00-16:00. Cost: RMB30 entrance fee to the scenic area.
