On the route between Beijing and the prosperous eastern seaboard provinces, Shijiazhuang has numerous transport systems connecting it to all over China. This is rather ironic considering most people come here, simply to reach the sights out of town.
By plane: Flights connect Shijiazhuang with more than a dozen cities in China, and to a few cities in Russia.
The airport is 33km from the city. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC, Zhongguo minhang, Tel: 0311-8027131), opposite the train station and beside the Bailin Hotel (see below), has buses (RMB20) that run to and from the airport in time for most major flights. A taxi to or from the airport should cost under RMB100. CAAC can provide various flight details, otherwise try Airport Information (Tel: 0311-8027326).
By train: Shijiazhuang has a fairly comprehensive railway network, with 13 rail lines connecting to various parts of China through the city's two railway stations. The most comm
only used destinations include Beijing (2.5hrs), Zhengzhou (4hrs), Handan (2hrs), Qinhuangdao (10hrs), Tianjin (5hrs), Taiyuan (4hrs) and Luoyang (8hrs), although there are services that run as far as Guangzhou (22hrs).
Of the two stations, the Main Station (Huoche zhan), on Shengli dajie, close to the intersection with Jiefang lu, is by far the more convenient. Tickets can be bought here, from the advance booking office at 47 Zhongshan lu, or in most major hotels.
By bus: There is a superhighway connecting Shijiazhuang with Beijing, the capital and the ride takes about 3 hours. There are two major long-distance bus stations in Shijiazhuang, one is the Xiangyang Long-distance Bus Station (Xiangyang changtu chezhan), northeast of the railway station, the other is the Central Long-distance Bus Station (Changtu chezhan) on Nanma lu. Most travellers will probably only use the Beijing expresses, although there are minibuses to nearer locations. Tickets can be bought at the stations.
City transport: There are around 50 bus lines in Shijiazhuang. Some of them will take you to the sights outside the city. No.213 takes you from the railway station to the Zhaozhou Bridge.
