The fact that Taiyuan lies in the very heart of Shanxi Province makes it about the same to access regardless of which direction you are coming from. It boasts fairly advanced transport systems.
By plane: There are daily flights to and from Beijing (a little more than one and a half hours), Shanghai (one and a half hours), Guangzhou (two and a half hours), and Xi'an (one hour and forty minutes), as well as infrequent flights to and from Tianjin (one and a half hours), Chengdu (about two hours),
Nanjing (one and a half hours) and Hong Kong (two hours and forty minutes).
The city airport, Wusu Airport (Wusu feiji chang), lies on the southeastern outskirts of the city, about 15km from city center. It will cost around RMB25 to reach the center by taxi. The CAAC office is located at 158 Yingze dajie (Tel: 0531-4042903, open 08:00-20:00), for flight and general airport information.
By train: It is by no means an overstatement to claim that Shanxi's transport is mainly shouldered by train. This is not hard to understand, since Shanxi transports all its coal exports to other provinces by train. As a result, railway transportation is not
only essential for cargo shipping, but also for passenger transport. For detailed information, please check the train schedule.
The railway station (Huoche zhan) lies in the eastern section of town (near the eastern end of Yingze dajie) and bus No.1, 4 and 5 run directly to the city center from it. The ticketing office is just outside of the station (window No.14 selling same-day tickets is specially designated for foreigners; open 08:00-12:00 and 14:30-18:30). If you can speak fair Chinese, you may also call 0351-2021240 to check the availability of tickets you want. Advance tickets can be had from the advance ticketing office at 138 Yingze dajie (Tel: 0351-4126657; open 08:30-20:00).
By bus: Buses are frequently used by locals for intra-province transport, as well as for transporting tourists to outlying destinations such as Datong and Wutaishan Mountain.
Buses to Datong leave at 08:00 (8hrs, fare: RMB31) from the long-distance bus station. Faster and more choices include a minibus (about the same price, one hour faster, yet only departing when full) and Iveco buses (RMB50, 5 hours).
For Wutaishan Mountain, there are even more options. Six buses leave for the mountain between 06:20 and 10:00. If these are booked or you arrive too late, private buses run from the northern end of the railway station between 06:30 and 13:00.
With the completion of Taiyuan-Jiuguan Expressway, it is now fairly convenient to head east to Hebei Province and further towards Beijing. Heading for Beijing, you should go to the western side of the long-distance bus station. Buses here depart every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 23:00. Since the price is the same RMB120 regardless of the type of bus you chose, it is advisable to pick a Mercedes or Volvo, which can cover the leg faster (within 6 hours).
The long-distance bus station lies on Yingze dajie, to the east of the May First Square (Wuyi guangchang) and to the west of the railway station.
City transport: All kinds of buses and minibuses traverse the city proper, offering great convenience for local people as well as backpacking tourists. Quite a number of buses and trams can be found at the afore-mentioned May First Square, although for non Chinese speakers finding their routes may prove hard. Taxis will generally not be more than RMB10 for most areas of the city.
