There are a few reasons why Datong, the second largest city in Shanxi province is difficult to stay in cheaply. The city is a haven for tourists, being near to Hengshan, one of China's five holy Taoist mountains, the Yungang Buddhist Caves and the impressive Hanging Temple. Hotel demand increased hotel supply, all helping to increase hotel prices. It is this, combined with the fact that the China International Travel Service (CITS, at the railway station and within the Yungang Hotel) holds a tight grip on many of the hotel prices, that means staying cheaply is rarely possible, and
only really available through the above mentioned agency.
At the bottom end there is little choice. The Gucheng Hotel (Gucheng binguan, Tel: 0352-6023585), at 14 Huanghua jie near to the railway station, has cheap doubles with bath for around RMB100. The Railway Hotel (Huoche binguan, Tel: 0352-5101326), about 800 meters north of the station, has even cheaper dorm beds (around RMB40), although you will probably have to go through CITS to get these. The Railroad Hotel (Tielu fandian), beside the railway station, also has cheap rooms, although they frequently do not allow foreigners access to these.
At the mid-price range, the two best hotels are almost certainly the Hongqi Hotel, and the Yungang Hotel, the former lying very close to the railway station and probably the better of the two. These two however are still fairly expensive for what you get.
At the top end, there is the Datong Grand Hotel (Datong binguan, Tel: 0352-2032476), at 1 Yingbin donglu, and the Haitong Grand Hotel. These two hotels both provide good service, with the former better on location, but the latter slightly better for comfort and style.
