By plane: At present, despite the airport that can be found to the south of town, there are no flights to the city. It may be worth asking - most likely flights will be from Beijing and Guangzhou - in the city you are in if the service has been resumed.
Those wishing to leave the city by air can try the Datong Air Service Company (Tel: 0352-2044039) at 1 Nanguan nanjie, who will give you information, and who are able to book flight tickets other than from/to Datong.
By train: Datong boasts a well developed system of railway transport, probably because of its vast major coal reserve. The city is linked to Beijing as well as other major provincial cities in Shanxi Province by the Beijing-
Baotou railway line and Datong-Fenglingdu railway line (a route usually taken by the trans-Siberia trains). Travelling longitudinally is the Datong-Lianyungang railway line.
The railway station lies on the northern outskirts. Train tickets can be hard to get, especially for those to Xi'an. CITS can help you to obtain tickets, although there will be a commission placed on their services. The CITS office is within the railway station, or in the Yungang Hotel.

By bus: Most travellers will have little use to take a bus from the city, because of the cobweb of railway lines that dispatch frequent trains all over Shanxi. The intra-provincial bus that is most obviously used by visitors is that to the sacred Buddhist mountain, Wutaishan. Buses from both the city's stations leave at around 07:00 for this mountain and take 7hrs (RMB30-40). Buses also leave to/from Taiyuan and take 5hrs (RMB50), the public bus leaving from the new station at 07:30, although regular private buses leave from outside the train station all day. Buses eastwards to Hengshan leave in the morning and take 2hrs (RMB20).
The new long distance bus station is on Yantong xilu, the old is on Xinjian beilu, just to the south of the railway station.
City transport: It is fairly easy to navigate the city by bus. From the railway station, you may take bus No.15 to the southern-lying hotels.
A taxi ride within the city normally costs around RMB10.
CITS, in both the train station and the Yungang Hotel, can organise tours to most of the nearby sights. Few people going to Datong will fail to visit the
Yungang Grottoes. For detailed transport information on this, please check the sight introduction.
