Mount Wutai

Transportation in Wutaishan

By plane: There is no direct plane from major cities in China to Wutaishan. However, to save time, you may try flying to Taiyuan, the provincial capital and then take a bus to Taihuai, the central village in this Buddhist mountain.

By train: Although lying mid-way between Taiyuan and Datong, it is not overly convenient to reach Wutaishan by train. Those from outside Shanxi Province had best first take a train to Taiyuan, from where you may take a direct train to Wutaishan. From the Wutaishan stop, you should take a bus straight to Taihuai, a leg of 40km that takes around one hour.

Trains from Taiyuan to Wutaishan:

Train Number Departure City Departure Time Arrival Time
7096 Taiyuan 08:20 13:07
K702 Taiyuan 21:00 00:29

Trains leaving Wutaishan:

Train Number Arrival City Departure Time Arrival Time
K702 Beijing 00:31 07:10
7096 Beijing (northern station) 13:08 21:24
7095 Taiyuan 15:05 20:53

By bus: For those based in the province, by far the best way to access Wutaishan is by bus, which saves you a lot of time and effort that would otherwise be wasted in changing trains. The main bus stations in Taihuai are all located along the main road through town, Shijuliangcheng gonglu, near to the Qingshui River (Qingshui he).
To and from Taiyuan: From the long-distance bus station at Wuyi Square in Taiyuan, the 230km leg to Wutaishan takes around 7-8 hrs (RMB20). Buses from here leave six times daily, between 06:20 and 10:00. It is also possible to catch a minibus from in front of the Taiyuan railway station throughout the day, leaving when full (RMB20). From Taihuai, buses for Taiyuan leave at 06:00, 07:00 and 14:00 (RMB40).
To and from Datong: From the new long distance bus station in Datong, the 190km leg to Wutaishan takes around 5-6hrs (RMB30). Buses leave at 07:00. From the old Datong bus station there are also buses that leave at 07:30 (RMB30). From Taihuai, buses for Datong leave at around 07:00 (RMB30).
It is also possible from Taihuai to catch private minibuses (RMB20-30), mainly in the morning, to both Taiyuan and Datong. These also leave from along the villages main track, Shijuliangcheng gonglu.
